Edition #21: The latest news from SiriusXM.
The holidays are here! Plus, two new channels (one is permanent), updates to Apple CarPlay, election coverage, lots of sports, and plenty more!
Friday, November 4th, 2022
Hello to all! Welcome back (or welcome aboard) to the SeriousXM newsletter. This is your weekly look into all things SiriusXM. Yes, the satellite radio service/provider you’re probably subscribed to or are listening to (someway somehow).
You may have noticed that I didn’t do an edition last week and that was because it was my 27th birthday. I took last week off just to celebrate but also to decompress and relax so I don’t feel stressed out around my special day.
Regardless, I’m back and I’m feeling good. It would be a nice post-birthday present if you subscribe to the newsletter for FREE here…
But also that you fork over a few bucks and donate them my way so I can receive support for my newsletter and for the work that I do. I’d seriously appreciate it!
And, please share and recommend this newsletter to anyone who’s interested in this newsletter and my independent journalism. I receive no funding for this newsletter, nor am I connected to SiriusXM or its parent company in any way, whatsoever. Anything will help so I appreciate it!
Without further ado, let’s catch you up and bring you the latest from SiriusXM.
DISCLAIMER: Before I begin, I want to acknowledge that yes, SiriusXM did release its third-quarter earnings this week, but I have no care to report on that. Customers care more about the programs and services SiriusXM has to offer, rather than what the company reports in terms of money and their bottom line on a quarterly basis. Too boring to report everything but the TL:DR (too long, didn’t read) version is that both subscribers and revenue are up for the 3rd quarter.
That’s it. That’s the last I’ll mention it. Now, onto the real news from the past two weeks.
The Latest News
The fallout from the breakup between SXM and the CBC.
I FIRST told you about this. Late last month, only then when others started to report about the agreement expiring when after nearly a month, I already told you about this (thus a reason why to subscribe to my newsletter). But nonetheless, the fallout continues.
Musicians across Canada are now expressing concern for their livelihoods after SXM and the CBC ended its agreement back on October 1st.
SXM pays artists $44 per play, a big amount compared to the minuscule royalties paid by top streaming services or through regular radio programming.
As I told you back on October 1st, the agreement ended and thus, CBC Radio 3 (SXM 162), CBC Music Country (SXM 171), ICI Musique Franco-Country (SXM 166), and ICI Musique Chansons (SXM 163) were dropped, leaving just CBC Radio One (SXM 169) and ICI Radio-Canada Premiere (SXM 170) on its lineup.
While Canadian music is still available on their free online playlists, and SXM is still committed to playing Canadian music in its programming, musicians are still worried about their income since radio plays were pretty much essential to how they were making their money and how they live their livelihoods.
According to an article from CBC.ca, The Society of Composers, Authors, and Music Publishers of Canada, also known as SOCAN, is a music and visual arts rights management organization that tracks and redistributes royalties and hopes that programming changes will not have a negative effect on royalties to Canadian music creators.
Royalties are typically paid out quarterly or biannually by licensing companies like SOCAN and Sound Exchange in the United States. Each payout is dated eight to 12 months prior, meaning that it could take one to two years before the financial impacts are known.
One year later, we’ll find out if these changes led to a severe serious financial downfall for some of these independent Canadian artists or if they’re doing okay. Only time will tell…
Mastermind joins one of SXM’s CBC-replaced channels.
One of those channels that were replaced was Mixtape: North, a channel for hip-hop and R&B music from across Canada. Its on Channel 164 and features Drake, The Weeknd, Tory Lanez, Jesse Reyez, and more.
Longtime Toronto hip-hop radio broadcaster Paul Parhar, who’s better known to the community as "Mastermind", has joined the new channel at launch.
Mastermind:
“I’m really excited to announce that I have signed on with SiriusXM to launch their new all Canadian “Hip-Hop and R&B” channel. #MixtapeNorth (Channel 164) is broadcast across North America on the SiriusXM satellite platform as well as worldwide on the SiriusXM App and on-line Streaming platform…This is BIG!! #MixtapeNorth has officially launched and if you’re a SiriusXM subscriber, you can listen as of right now, on Channel 164. Hip-hop and R&B dominates the globe and Canada has birthed some of its biggest stars in modern music. From Drake and The Weeknd, to Tory Lanez and Jessie Reyez, and the legends that paved the way like Kardinall Offishall, k-os and Choclair. Mixtape: North is who’s hot now and who’s up next. We’re playing the greatest homegrown bangers from across Canada.”
Off Lease Only is offering an SXM trial to its customers.
Off Lease Only, a Florida pre-owned car dealership announced an agreement with SiriusXM last week to provide its services to eligible customers through SiriusXM’s Pre-Owned Program. This will include a three-month subscription to SXM’s Platinum Plan when purchasing pre-owned vehicles that are factory-equipped with SXM.
As of the last check, over 1,570 vehicles of all makes and models are equipped with satellite radio and thus are eligible for the program.
Stellantis and Lucid agree to put SXM in their 🚗s.
Speaking of cars, more and more of them will soon have SiriusXM inside for quite some time.
First, Stellantis and SXM announced an extension of their distribution agreement this week. You may not have heard of Stellantis, but you definitely have heard of their brands. This new agreement will make sure that Chrysler, Jeep, Dodge, Ram, Alfa Romeo, Fiat, and Maserati vehicles have SiriusXM for the next five years into 2027.
SXM is the standard on all of the brands’ vehicle lineups with SXM with 360L making its debut on an Alfa Romeo starting with the Tonale in the Spring of 2023. Others will include the Dodge Hornet.
Owners and lessees receive a trial subscription to SXM’s Platinum Plan with the purchase or lease of any new, certified pre-owned, and eligible pre-owned SXM-equipped vehicle.
But they weren’t the only ones to get it.
The Lucid Group has also agreed to put SXM inside their own cars as part of its standard in-dash feature. These electric vehicles will include the Lucid Air, the Dream Edition, Air Grand Touring Performance, Air Grand Touring, Air Touring, and Air Pure, among others.
It’ll first come out with a beta version, followed by the full experience next year. Upon the full launch, all owners will receive a free three-month trial of SXM’s Platinium Plan.
Lucid owners will also have access to SiriusXM’s Pandora Stations feature, which employs Pandora’s personalization technology to give users the ability to create channels based on their favorite artists, and then customize those channels to play even more of what they want to hear.
SXM has a new app version that’ll benefit Apple CarPlay drivers.
Last week, SiriusXM released an update version of its app, 5.15.1, for iPhones, iPads, and iPod Touches that’ll now feature a new Apple CarPlay interface.
The Desk got a hold on this story and reports that it offers better content sorting of its channels plus playback and sorting support for on-demand audio and podcasts. The new interface allows listeners to control the playback speed for talk radio and podcast content when interacting with Apple CarPlay.
It now has three main sections: Discover, Favorites, and Browser.
Discover: Streamers can jump back to a channel, on-demand episode, or podcast that they were playing previously within the Recently Played window. Another button, called All Channels, pulls up a list of live and curated channels from its 400+ channels.
Favorites: Its the favorites list from the phone and tablet app, but reorganized for CarPlay users. This includes My Channels, the first four channels in a user’s favorite list, My Shows, on-demand shows in a favorites list, and My Episodes, specific favorite episodes of radio shows and podcasts.
Browse: Helps find any channel your looking for from all genres, plus a dedicated section for Howard Stern (SXM 100 and 101) and channels are displayed if a user’s package includes that programming.
For those who don’t have Apple CarPlay but do have an Apple device, the updated app should offer a number of bug fixes and performance enhancements that should lead to a better, smoother streaming experience. No word on when similar changes could take place for Android and Android Auto users.
A new SXM podcast from Doug Blunt on engaging books.
When does SXM not have a new podcast out there?
This time, its a new podcast from The New York Times best-selling writer Doug Brunt for Dedicated with Doug Brunt. Available every week on the SXM app, Stitcher, and wherever else you get your audio, Mr. Brunt engages in insightful and entertaining conversations with fellow award-winning authors to show you what it takes to create them. They’ll also discuss a number of issues and stories that they’ve experienced.
New Channels
Eric Church and Selena Gomez both have new SXM channels of their own.
Today is a monumental day for new channels as SiriusXM will not launch one, but TWO brand new channels. One will be permanent and the other is temporary, of course.
Let’s start with the permanent: Its Eric Church Outsiders Radio. It starts today on streaming-only plans on Channel 740 and it will feature original programming plus music from his career that has spanned close to two decades and dozens of awards and Grammy nominations to count. It will also feature artists and songs that Church likes that don’t involve country, ranging from rock to soul and more.
It will also have a temporary pop-up run on SXM Channel 61 from today, November 4th until Sunday, November 6th. 61 is normally the home to Y2Kountry, country hits from the 2000s.
Programs will include…
Best Of Outsiders Radio: archival episodes of Church’s monthly show, Outsiders Radio, aired on The Highway (SXM 56).
LIVE, From The Pit: a monthly full concert performance from a past Church show. The featured concert broadcast for November will be from the Green Bay stop of the 2022 Gather Again Tour.
A Song To Sing: a one-hour monthly specialty show hosted by a songwriter who has had a hand in penning Church’s numerous hits, launching with Jeff Hyde, whose songwriting credits include Church’s “Springsteen.”
Insiders Hours: monthly guest DJ shows with friends, fans and collaborators launching with Lainey Wilson — the most-nominated artist at the upcoming 2022 CMA Awards and a cast member on Season 5 of the hit show Yellowstone premiering next month.
This will extend his partnership with SiriusXM since his monthly show, Outsiders Radio, debuted on The Highway back in February 2015.
Now, here’s the temporary one: Selena Gomez Radio. This temporary pop-up channel launches today, Friday, November 4th, and will run on one of SXM’s Limited Edition channels on Channel 14 from today until Thursday, November 10th, and then continue on the SXM app until Friday, December 2nd.
It will play a mixture of pop and rhythm with influential classics plus behind-the-scenes stories while Selena plays her favorites, including special commentary and music from artists she loves, including Adele, Ariana Grande, Britney Spears, Frank Sinatra, Madonna, and Taylor Swift, just to name a few.

SiriusXM’s 2022 Midterm Election Coverage
For those news and political junkies and diehards, this is for you (no, this is not me thankfully. Lol). I’ll keep this short to avoid alienating anyone and to avoid making this too political at all costs.
SiriusXM will have nonstop coverage of next week’s midterm elections across its vast amount of news and political channels.
P.O.T.U.S. (Politics of the United States; SXM 124), SiriusXM Progress (SXM 127), SiriusXM Urban View (SXM 126), Triumph (SXM 111), and SiriusXM Patriot (SXM 125) will carry live and extensive coverage of the latest results, plus instant reactions and interviews with winners and losers.
You’ll also find up-to-the-minute news, and election results on its news channels as well, including simulcasts of FOX News (SXM 114), CNN (SXM 116), MSNBC (SXM 118), and others.
The 2022 Rock and Rock Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony
SiriusXM will have complete coverage of this year’s Rock and Roll Hall of Fame induction ceremony.
First, live backstage coverage and commentary from the Red Carpet event will take place tomorrow night, Saturday, November 5th at 8pm ET (5pm PT) on Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Radio (SXM 310) and Volume (SXM online-only 780) with SiriusXM’s own Bevy Smith. This is before the ceremony and will also be streamed live on YouTube.
Then, there’ll be recaps of the ceremony on Feedback on Faction Talk (SXM 103) starting on Monday, November 7th.
Two weeks after the ceremony, HBO (on TV) and SiriusXM (on the Radio) will simulcast the edited version of the event on Saturday, November 19th at 8pm ET (5pm PT), which will air on Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Radio, Classic Rewind (SXM 25) and Volume.
This year’s inductees are as follows…
Pat Benatar and Neil Giraldo
Duran Duran
Eminem
Eurythmics
Dolly Parton
Lionel Richie
Carly Simon
Judas Priest and Jimmy Jam & Terry Lewis for Musical Excellence.
Harry Belafonte and Elizabeth Cotten for Early Influence.
Allen Grubman, Jimmy Iovine, and Sylvia Robinson for the Ahmet Ertegun Award.
Sports
Finally, I got to the sports section. I know, the holidays are here and there were lots to talk about from that. But there’s also a vast amount of sports to talk about so let’s get to it.
🏀: Coach K gets to continue to host his own SXM show as College Basketball is near.
Legendary Hall of Fame basketball coach Mike Krzyzewski, Coach K to all, signed a multi-year agreement with SiriusXM to continue to host his exclusive show, Basketball and Beyond with Coach K with co-host Dave Sims.
Coach K is now retired but he began hosting his weekly show in 2005 so this new agreement will take him to 2025, two decades at the helm.
New episodes are released during the college basketball season plus multiple offseason episodes. The 18th season began yesterday, Thursday, November 3rd, and will debut on Thursdays at 6pm ET (3pm PT) on ESPNU Radio (Channel 84) and SiriusXM ACC Radio (Channel 371) plus the SXM app after the debut airing.
And speaking of College Basketball and his caliber, the season is about to start up once again and SiriusXM will have it all… again. From opening night to the crowning of the national champions, SiriusXM will have every single match.
Opening night is Monday, November 7th, and for the men, it includes defending national champion and #5 Kansas vs. Omaha at 8pm ET (5pm PT; BIG 12 Play-by-Play Channel 199 or online Channel 953) and #1 North Carolina vs. UNC Wilmington at 9pm ET (6pm PT; ESPN Xtra on Channel 81).
For the women, you got defending national champion and #1 South Carolina vs. East Tennessee State at 8:30pm ET (5:30pm PT; SEC Play-by-Play Channel 190 or online Channel 961) plus action from #2 Stanford, #8 Iowa State, #9 Notre Dame, and #10 NC State, among others.
The season’s coverage will also include 21 tournaments, including the Legends Classic, the ESPN Events Invitational, the Phil Knight Invitational, and the Phil Knight Legacy tournaments.
All of this, of course, leads up to March Madness and the Championship games on Sunday, April 2nd (Women’s) and Monday, April 3rd (Men’s).
🏈: NFL Football Guide for Week 9
Oh yeah, more football! Matthew Keys from The Desk does an amazing job compiling this weekly list of all games that can be heard on SiriusXM.
Here is this week’s list.
⚾: MLB’s World Series is nearing its conclusion.
As I write this, the Houston Astros are one win away from winning the World Series. They have a 3-2 series lead over the Philadelphia Phillies and they can clinch the title at home tomorrow unless the Phillies have something to say about that and force a Game 7. Whatever happens, one thing is for sure: The baseball season definitely ends this weekend.
Game 6 will happen, but Game 7 may happen if necessary depending on what happens in Game 6. Regardless, SiriusXM will have it on both days, both starting at 8:03 p.m. ET (5:03 p.m. PT).
National broadcast: ESPN Radio on Channel 80.
Spanish-language broadcast: Channel 176 or online 993.
Phillies hometown broadcast via 94.1 WIP-FM: Channel 177 or online 860.
Astros hometown broadcast via 790 KBME: Channel 175 or online 850.
⚽: MLS Cup is this weekend.
This is it. The finale to this year’s MLS season is here with the MLS Cup between the Philadelphia Union and the LAFC.
SiriusXM will carry the game, of course, on SiriusXM F.C. which is Channel 157. The cup will begin at 4:05 p.m. ET (1:05 p.m. PT).
⛳: How about some Golf in Mexico?!
Yes, you heard that right. Off to El Camaleón Mayakoba Golf Course in Playa del Carmen, Mexico for this weekend’s World Wide Technology Championship at Mayakoba.
SiriusXM of course will have all the action on SiriusXM PGA Tour Radio (Channel 92)
Friday, November 4th, at 12 Noon ET (9am PT).
Saturday, November 5th at 1pm ET (10am PT).
Sunday, November 6th at 12 Noon ET (9am PT).
🏁: NASCAR’s season finale is in Phoenix.
Another league having its season finale this weekend, other than the MLB and the MLS, is NASCAR. Its the Championship 4 finale from Phoenix Raceway in Central Arizona.
While all racers will take part, only four will have a chance to claim the crown. It will either be Christopher Bell, Ross Chastain, Chase Elliot, or Joey Logano. SiriusXM will have that race plus crown other champions in NASCAR’s other series as well.
Friday, November 4th
NASCAR Gander RV and Outdoors Truck Series finale - Lucas Oil 150 at 7:30 p.m. ET (4:30 p.m. PT).
NASCAR Xfinity Series finale - NASCAR Xfinity Series Championship Race at 4:00 p.m. ET (1:00 p.m. PT).
NASCAR Cup Series - NASCAR Cup Series Championship at 2:00 p.m. ET (11:00 a.m. PT).
And that is IT for this week. I know. I wrote a very long newsletter this week. But hey, otherwise, you’d miss something. It took me more than five and a half hours to create, research, verify, and write all of this for you.
The least you can do is be grateful and subscribe for FREE to my newsletter.
Also, share the newsletter with those you love.
But more importantly, please please please donate to my newsletter and my work. It gets frustrating at times, but its all worth it in the end.
Thank you so very much for subscribing and for reading my weekly newsletter. Until next week, have a great weekend!
