Edition #02: The latest news from SiriusXM.
Steve Scully is on POTUS, Quentin Tarantino joins SXM podcasters, and more...
Friday, June 10th, 2022.
You made it to the weekend! This will be the first of many weekly newsletters taking a look at this week’s news, events, and any changes happening inside SiriusXM.
Here’s what you need to know this week as plenty of things have happened and are happening.
The Latest News
Steve Scully is back. This time on SiriusXM.
One of the most recognizable names and faces from C-SPAN’s history is back… this time on SiriusXM as host of a new talk show on its P.O.T.U.S. channel (Channel 124).
Scully spent three decades at C-SPAN as a political editor and his work was on various C-SPAN programs, including the Washington Journal (Daily from 7:00-10:00 a.m. E.T. on C-SPAN Radio, Channel 455) and the podcast, The Weekly.
According to The Hill, Scully was briefly suspended from C-SPAN in 2020 after sending tweets revealing he was seeking advice on how to handle attacks from then-President Trump from White House aide Anthony Scaramucci.
He then surprisingly left the network and has since worked at Washington, D.C.’s Bipartisan Policy Center as its senior V.P.
While still retaining this role, he will now host a new show as well on P.O.T.U.S. called The Briefing with Steve Scully which will air weekdays at midday from 12:00-2:00 p.m. E.T. Some events with the Bipartisan Policy Center will also air on the channel as well.
In a brief description of the program, SiriusXM said Scully’s show…
will consider all sides and every perspective, helping listeners stay on top of what’s happening within the Beltway and beyond.
Scully replaced now-disgraced news anchor Chris Cuomo from his midday show on the channel late last year after being fired by CNN from an ethics/personal conduct scandal involving accusations of sexual misconduct against his own brother, the former governor of New York, Andrew Cuomo.
Quentin Tarantino is an SXM podcaster now.
Starting next month, Quentin Tarantino and Roger Avary will launch their own podcast with SiriusXM subsidiary Stitcher. Launching on July 19th, and with the trailer available here, The Video Archives Podcast will take a look at film classics and new favorites from the perspective of Tarantino and Avary by taking them back to where they first worked together… at the Video Archives store.
Back in 1983, Tarantino and Avary started working together at the movie rental store in Manhattan Beach, California and it was there where they started working on the Oscar-winning 1994 movie Pulp Fiction (which started Tarantino, John Travolta, Samuel L. Jackson, Uma Thurman, Bruce Willis, Tom Roth, and Christopher Walken).
After all these decades later, they’ll revisit them all in the podcast and they’ll do so by watching movies from actual VHS tapes. That’s right… VHS. They’ll explore movies that were barely recognized but loved by the duo and even rate the quality of the video transfer. Yeah, nostalgia is coming back.
In a joint statement, Quentin and Roger said…
We never imagined that 30 years after we worked together behind the counter at Video Archives, we would be together again doing the exact same thing we did back then: talking passionately about movies on VHS. Watching movies was what originally brought us together and made us friends, and it's our love of movies that still brings us together today. So we surrounded ourselves with the original Video Archives collection, where we both worked before we became celebrated filmmakers, and time-traveled ourselves back to the golden age of VHS. We LOVE to discuss movies, and we want to welcome you into the Video Archives Podcast to hang with us and Archives' new employee Gala, and discover the hidden VHS gems on our shelves.
‘90s artist Lisa Loeb is now on SXM.
This was actually news a couple of weeks ago but I thought I’d mention it here since I forgot to mention it in the first edition.
Singer/songwriter Lisa Loeb is back! She had hits such as I Do, Do You Sleep? and Stay (I Missed You) which ended up going No. 1 for a time in 1994. Now, she’s back, and guess where she ended up… on the 90s on 9 of course!
The hour-long Stay with Lisa Loeb will air three(!) times on the 90s on 9 every weekday at 12:00 Noon, 4:00, and 8:00 p.m. E.T. (9:00 a.m., 1:00, and 5:00 p.m. P.T.).
This will be her show to talk about whatever she wants plus play 90s music of course. It will also feature Where They Are Now segments with musicians and celebrities from the 1990s.
Events This Weekend
There are some events taking place this week across SiriusXM, but sports mainly dominate the lineup. If you are not a sports fan, I apologize. If you know of any such events taking place on SiriusXM, e-mail them to me at roly4266@gmail.com and I’ll shout them out in a future edition.
The Belmont Stakes is this weekend.
🏇: Tomorrow is the final race in horse racing’s triple crown… the Belmont Stakes.
Rich Strike won the Kentucky Derby but gave up racing for the Triple Crown almost immediately after pulling out of the Preakness Stakes so no Triple Crown this year. Still, nonetheless, the last race in the Triple Crown is this weekend so horse racing fans are ready for it.
If you wanna find the race for yourself, SiriusXM will have it, just like they’ve always have been for years now.
NBC Sports Audio (Channel 85) will have coverage throughout the weekend, including preview and post coverage. Race day coverage and broadcast will come from NBC Sports Audio itself.
It begins tomorrow at 8:00 a.m. E.T. with Equine Forum from the Horse Racing Radio Network (HRRN) on Channel 219 or 201 (depending on which unit you have, either Sirius or XM).
NBC Sports Audio will have more pre-race coverage with Down The Stretch from 10:00 a.m.-2:00 p.m. E.T. (6:00-10:00 a.m. P.T.) and then coverage itself at 6:00 p.m. with a post-time race call at around 6:45 p.m. E.T (3:45 p.m. P.T.).
The race will also air on Mad Dog Sports Radio (Channel 82). And for horse racing fans, Channel 219 or 201 also carries daily horse racing recaps and analysis from At The Races with Steve Byk every weekday from 9:00 a.m.-12:00 Noon E.T. (6:00-9:00 a.m. P.T.)
The NBA Finals continue tonight into next week.
🏀: The NBA Finals are in full swing and, as of this newsletter, the Boston Celtics are up 2 games to 1 in the series against the Golden State Warriors. Game 4 of the series is tonight at 9:00 p.m. E.T. and yes, it is available on ABC on television but we’re talking about satellite radio here.
If you’re looking for the games yourself, SiriusXM NBA Radio will have all the action. From pre-and post-game coverage to the game itself and everything in between, then you’re gonna want to tune in to Channel 86 where all games are being broadcast.
BONUS: If you have SiriusXM’s streaming plan, you can also choose to listen to the hometown broadcasts of Golden State and Boston.
For Golden State, audio via 95.7 KGMZ-FM, the games are on Channel 889.
For Boston, audio via 98.5 WBZ-FM, the games are on Channel 881.
Here’s the schedule for the rest of the games (as previously mentioned, Boston has a 2-1 series lead over Golden State)…
Game 4: Tonight (as of this writing) at 9:00 p.m. E.T. / 6:00 p.m. P.T.
Game 5: Monday, June 13th at 9:00 p.m. E.T. / 6:00 p.m. P.T.
Game 6 (if necessary): Thursday, June 16th at 9:00 p.m. E.T. / 6:00 p.m. P.T.
Game 7 (if necessary): Sunday, June 19th at 8:00 p.m. E.T. / 5:00 p.m. P.T. (series finale if it goes 7 games).
🏒: For those of you wondering about hockey as well, since the NHL playoffs are also taking place, no word on broadcast information since the Stanley Cup Final matchup is still yet to be determined. At least the Colorado Avalanche is in it and will represent the Western Conference.
The Eastern Conference Finals are still taking place and, as of this writing, the Tampa Bay Lightning are leading the series 3 games to 2 against the New York Rangers. One more win is all it takes for Tampa Bay to be in its third straight Stanley Cup Final. Game 6 is Saturday night with Game 7 (if necessary) on Tuesday.
As soon as I have broadcast information regarding the Stanley Cup Final, I’ll pass that along to you. The Hometown broadcasts will be involved (streaming only) plus SiriusXM NHL Radio (Channel 91) will have all the games.
The CFL is back and SiriusXM will have it all.
🏈: Once again, SiriusXM will have every single game of the Canadian Football League.
Now, hold on a second. There’s Canadian football? The answer to that is yes. But for those that do care, I’m here to cover it for you.
Mainly via SiriusXM Canada, all 81 regular-season games, plus the four playoff games and the 109th Grey Cup (this year from Saskatchewan, home of the Roughriders) will be heard on news/talk station Canada Talks (Channel 167) while French-language broadcasts of the Montreal Alouettes will be on the French indie/alternative station Influence Franco (Channel 174).
If you are looking for more football in your life until the NFL season begins, then this is it. Give it a try.
So, there you have it. This will be the format for the news portion of the newsletter moving forward. Usually, the next section will feature new channels or channel moves, but nothing has been discovered this week. Once we know of a change, you’ll hear about it in next week’s edition.
For now, thank you for joining me on this first full week of the SeriousXM newsletter! Since this was the first week, there was a newsletter every day this week. However, from here on out, we’ll be posting at least twice a week:
Thursdays for Throwback Thursdays - TBT where we take a look at old lineups, programs, videos, sounders, etc. from the golden days of satellite radio.
Fridays (for now) for the news portion where we take a look at the week’s news, plus new channels, programming changes, events, and many more.
Thank you for the wonderful support you’ve given me and this newsletter in the first week! I’m amazed and touched that you’ve decided to subscribe and receive the latest word on what’s happening at SiriusXM every week!
Since you are subscribing to this, if you know of anyone else who may benefit from reading this, then tell your friends and family about it here! It is FREE after all.
And again, if you have any questions, comments, suggestions, or news tips, then send them my way! The email once again is roly4266@gmail.com. I’ve actually received some emails this week regarding comments on the newsletter and the TBT feature I did yesterday so thank you and keep them coming! They will certainly help the newsletter go a long long way.
That’s it for this week. Unless major breaking news drops about SiriusXM, I’ll talk to y’all again next Thursday. Have a great weekend!
